Nothing finer than Carolina
By Bob Damron
"Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina in the morning"... or so go the lyrics of an old refrain. And sometimes the nights aren't so bad either especially in the larger cities... Charleston. Columbia and Greenville.
Columbia, the state capital. exemplifies the New South. Commerce, education and technocracy have replaced the sleepy cottonfields... and 18.000 students now attend the University of South Carolina. Once the most cultural city in the New World, Charleston has survived siege, war, fire, flood, epidemic and hurricanes.
Charleston has a great new disco. Les Jardins, upstairs at 36 N. Market St. The King Street Garden & Gun Club at 240 King St., has become very mixed and

South Carolina was one of the most devoted confederate states, and it's refusal to give blacks the vote, led to a post civil war military rule. This created a ruinou's state of decline, from which it took many years to recover. Today. situated between the industrial north and Florida playgrounds to the south, it is gaining momentum as a popular all-year outdoor recreational and resort area.

burger you'll ever taste. And, rarest of rare, it is a place where neither the patrons nor the management have an attitude problem. The night we were there, the manager. Teddy, and barperson. Diana, were on duty. They impressed us with their personable manner and intelligent and witty conversation, making us feel right at home. The best part of the evening was the nightly live entertainment. The night we were there a Miss Marianne McCall performed. She is a fantastic singer who has become quite popular in the Chicago area, who will at times remind you of Jane Olivor, at times Miss Striesand yet at all times unique.
She did three different shows that night, each one a concert in itself. If she is playing when you are in town by all means catch her act. You'll be hearing much about her soon.
Chicago has three legitimate theaters and several smaller theaters, and currently, a Gay Theater which performs Monday and Tuesday at the Baton Show Lounge, 436 N. Clark St. "Evita" is currently playing at the Shubert with a fine cast giving an excellent performance. Travel arrangements can be made through Arcade Travel whose ads appear elsewhere in this paper. One last thought. It really is the "Windy City" so don't even think of using hairspray. It won't do you a bit of good!
